Turkey: Call for Tenders for Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey metro


The City of Istanbul announced the launch on 18 September of a Call for Tenders for the construction of the 17.5 km, 26-minute Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey metro line, with a capacity to transport 70,000 persons per hour. The project, in addition to tunnels and viaducts, will include 15 stations.

Brazil: Thales Alenia Space awarded satellite contract


Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture by Thales and Finmeccanica under French management, was awarded a €300 million contract for the construction of a satellite for Brazil, becoming part of the space programme of that South American nation for the next ten years.

Norway: Vard (Fincantieri) awarded $1.1 billion contract


Through Vard – a Norwegian company quoted on the Singapore exchange – Fincantieri was awarded a contract from the Dof Sunsea-Technip joint venture for four pipe-lay barges and offshore support, for an approximate overall value of $1.1 billion.

Greece: State closes with primary surplus of €2.6 billion


Now in its 6th year of recession, Greece has nevertheless made progress in balancing the public budget, closing the first half of the year with a surplus of €2.6 billion, against the foreseen 3.1 billion deficit target. As announced by Greek Deputy Minister for Finance Christos Staikouras, the sum, which does not include the costs of interest, local expenses and social expenses, “makes the prospect of a year-end primary surplus entirely feasible”.
