The Directorate General for Development Cooperation will earmark a 150,000-euro multilateral emergency contribution to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to cover a humanitarian action plan drafted in the wake of the violence that erupted in January in the western Iraqi province of Al Anbar.
At least 400,000 refugees
The Italian contribution is a concrete sign of attention to the Iraqi people seriously affected by the consequences of clashes between government troops and armed Fundamentalist militias that has to date led to the displacement of at least 400,000 civilians. Italy’s intervention is in support of the IFRC emergency plan being carried out in concert with the Iraqi Red Crescent and the International Red Cross Committee for the 3-month assistance of 25,000 people.
Technical support and training
The plan calls for strengthening Iraqi Red Crescent capabilities through technical support and training, with a view to ensuring an effective response to the humanitarian emergency under way. Assistance will also be extended to the displaced populations of Fallujah, Al Saqlawiya and Al-Ramadi, bringing emergency supplies to approximately 2,000 families and distributing food rations for one month to 5,000 families at risk.
