The case of the Italian Marines detained in India was the focus of a meeting today between Minister Federica Mogherini, in The Hague for the Nuclear Security Summit, and her Indian counterpart. Mogherini said she “reiterated our determination to explore all political and legal actions in order to have our right to exercise jurisdiction in the case of the Marines recognised”, and that, while “no significant steps forward or news” came out of the meeting, a “frank” exchange was had.
Staffan de Mistura returns to Rome
The minister then explained that special government envoy Staffan de Mistura had returned to Rome today and would report to the foreign and defence committees in parliament tomorrow. She added that even though her encounter with her Indian counterpart had not resulted in any news, it was “important to seize the opportunity”.
