One hundred nations, 5 days, one capital city… These are just some of the numbers describing the UN meeting for young people taking place in Rome from 30 June to 4 July 2014. The event is a world exclusive organised by the UN through the World Federation of the United Nations Associations (WFUNA) in collaboration with the Italian Society for International Organization (SIOI). Entitled WIMUN 2014 (International Model United Nations), the event is the most important “simulation” of its kind in the world. It brings together hundreds of students from the world’s top universities and colleges to compete for a space in junior diplomacy. The rules of the game are established by diplomacy, with its guidelines and instruments for the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The WIMUN shuttle service
A shuttle service will run between the two organisations taking part, with their long history of educating people in international relations and promoting diplomacy as the best vehicle for peoples to get to know each other and engage in cultural exchanges. They are the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the SIOI, the UN organisation in Italy which this year is celebrating its 70the anniversary. WIMUN 2014 will enjoy the patronage of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lazio Region, the Province of Rome, Rome City Council, the EU mission in Italy, the European Parliament’s office in Italy, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), EXPO 2015, the UN agencies in Rome (FAO, WFP, IFAD, ILO, UNICRI) and numerous Italian universities.
