“Il diplomatico poliedrico: Silvio Mignano”, the next instalment in the new series of “Diplomazia e Dintorni” radio programmes, will be broadcast on Tuesday 11 November 2014 at 20:00. The programme will feature special guest Silvio Mignano: poet, story-teller, artist, illustrator and diplomat.
Silvio Mignano has a degree in law and has been a diplomat since 1991. His first postings were in Cuba and Kenya, after which he served as Consul General in Basle and Ambassador in Bolivia. He has always accompanied his diplomatic career with his literary work, which he views as a vital part of his personality and by no means “just a hobby”.
Mignano has published a number of books – novels “Una lezione sull’amore” (Fazi, 1999) and “Le porte dell’inferno” (Fazi, 2001), and the poetry collections “Taccuino nero per il viaggio” (Caramanica, 2003), “Non abbiamo uno sceneggiatore di scorta” (Gente Común, 2009) and “La nostra ribelle nuova educazione” (Manni, 2011). He has also penned a collection of stories “Il regalo del rinoceronte” (Manni, 2004), which he also illustrated. He has contributed to literary reviews such as “L’Indice dei libri del mese” and “L’immaginazione”. His books have been translated into Spanish.
Awards and film work
With “La nostra ribelle buona educazione” Silvio Mignano won the distinguished Sertoli Salis Prize for the best Italian book of poetry.
His work for the cinema includes the screenplay of Claudio Del Punta’s “Haiti chérie” (2007). He won the Young Jury Prize at the Locarno Festival and the prize for best screenplay at the Mons International Love Film Festival in Belgium.
Silvio Mignano is also an artist, illustrator and curator. He organised Mimmo Rotella’s “Avenue Rotella” exhibition at the Museum Tinguely in Basle in 2006, curated along with Germano Celant. He was chair of the organising committee of the La Paz Biennale in 2009, for which Achille Bonito Oliva chaired the jury.
