The change in relations between Cuba and the U.S. is a “prelude to the opening of a major market also for Italian firms”, declared Deputy Minister for Economic Development Carlo Calenda in a press release. “I was on a mission to Cuba during the Havana Trade Fair, at which Italy made a good showing, and on that occasion the Cuban government announced the launch of more than 200 investment projects open to the private sector”. “In April of next year”, Calenda added, “we intend to organize the first system mission there so as to get the jump on our competitors”. The comment followed on American President Barak Obama’s announcement of the imminent end of the 50-year long embargo on Cuba. “The normalization of relations with Cuba opens a new chapter” Obama said. “Trade relations will also be easier. In order to give impetus to the new Cuban private sector, the U.S. will be able to export construction materials, goods for local businesses and farm equipment. These changes will make it easier for Cubans to access certain goods at contained prices. Cuba is also boosting its Mariel free trade area, which could become a major logistical and industrial hub for working with the U.S. market, not least after the doubling of the Panama Canal.
