“No EU government is talking about suspending Schengen. Sacrificing our freedom of circulation would be an unacceptable price to pay”. Minister Paolo Gentiloni reported to the Senate on the attacks in France on “three days of horror that France and Europe will never forget”. Stating that the government shared the pain of the families of the victims of this hateful act of terror, Gentiloni added that yesterday’s “republican march” in Paris “was a solemn response of unity and signalled our determination to defend our security and reinforce the pillars of freedom on which we stand”.
Common declaration
“The European Ministers for the Interior”, Gentiloni underscored, “along with representatives of the U.S., Canada and the EU Commission, approved a joint statement on information sharing”. He announced that a meeting of EU foreign ministers would be held on Monday in Brussels with a focus on counter terrorism. “Specific, targeted – not generic – legal intervention will be undertaken”, he added.
ISIS is terrorism becoming State
“The Daesh is terrorism becoming a State that is now in control of a vast territory, and has no lack of resources”, Gentiloni said, underscoring that the battle against ISIS will be “long and Italy is directly committed”. “The terrorism of the Daesh”, he added, “is an incubator and a magnet for other forms of terrorism because it is capable of recruiting from a broad network of foreign fighters and lone wolves”.
