Alfano: “Diplomats are the engineers who build the bridges of dialogue”

“The global scenario changes at a fast-moving pace and we are now faced with a situation that is very volatile and intensely menacing, which can only be governed through dialogue and multilateralism, with the aim of achieving a coordinated action between the United Nations, NATO and EU. In this context, the Mediterranean is crucial in guaranteeing security, not only at regional but also at global level.

Italy is acting in a very effective way, combining security and solidarity. As it came out in the recent Paris Summit, our line of action is now appreciated and supported by the international community, although more must be done.

Libya is the major challenge in the Mediterranean. Italy’s agenda hinges on three main aspects: Reductio ad unum (reduce to one) the negotiation formats and relaunch the role of the UN; involve the bordering and transit Countries (a format launched in Rome’s Conference of the Countries of Transit) and support the Libyan economy through initiatives such as the First Italy-Libya Economic Forum that I organised in Agrigento on 8 July.”

The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, ahead of his address at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio (Villa d’Este) scheduled for today at 4:45 p.m.
