Lisbon – Italian takes centre stage at Mother Language Day

Sunday, 21 February, is the International Mother Language Day launched by UNESCO in 1999 with the aim of promoting linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The Italian Institute of Culture in Lisbon has decided to celebrate the Day by taking part in the initiatives organised by the Gabinete Lisboa Encruzilhada de Mundos. Lisbon will celebrate the Day with events located in different places on the Colina de Santana, an area of Lisbon with a high concentration of foreign emigrants, especially from China and Bangladesh. Starting from early morning and throughout the day on Sunday, the programme will unfold with a series of theatre, music, art and literature events. More specifically, a literary marathon will take place with the reading of poetry and significant texts in Italian, German, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese and Galician, both in the original version and in the Portuguese translation. The texts in Italian will be read by Giacomo Scalisi, Giulia Lamoni, Paola D’Agostino and Luisa Violo, the director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Lisbon.
