The humanity we will show in receiving desperate refugees, the intelligence through which we will approach migration phenomena, the resolve with which we will fight against human traffickers will allow us to show the world the quality of democratic life.
(Sergio Mattarella)
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation celebrates World Refugee Day and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As of this year, Italy is once again among the main donors of the Organization, where an Italian, Filippo Grandi, is at the helm.
We rank second in Europe in terms of the number of asylum requests. The Italian system demands that every single application for international protection be carefully assessed on a case-by-case basis. More than half of the refugees crossing the Mediterranean are rescued by Italian ships.
It is a long-standing humanitarian tradition and a source of pride for Italy in all international forums.
