Rome to host an earthquake hazard workshop as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian-Japanese diplomatic relations

Earthquake risk prevention: a very topical issue in Italy today in the light of the earthquakes that have struck Central Italy during the last few months. This will be the topic of debate with Japanese experts in an interactive workshop to be held in Rome as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two Countries. The initiative, scheduled to take place at the Chamber of Deputies on Dec. 1, is promoted by the Japanese Embassy in Italy and organised in partnership with the Italy-Japan Foundation. The workshop will be divided into two sessions: the first will enable an exchange of opinions between Italian and Japanese academics and experts while the second will be configured as a forum of debate among the major Italian and Japanese players in the sector, offering multimedia presentations on the best practices established in Japan. The topics of greatest interest and urgency for Italy especially focus on architectural conservation, earthquake resistant and protection construction techniques and the restoration of cultural heritage.

The long-standing friendship between Italy and Japan is full of acts of mutual solidarity in the aftermath of the natural disasters that have struck both Countries: from the earthquake in L’Aquila (2009) to the one in Tohoku (2011), up to the current dramatic situation in Central Italy. Organised to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Italian-Japanese relations, the workshop aims to express a message of good neighbourhood and shared experiences with a population that has been hard struck by natural disasters but which has been capable of developing cutting edge procedures and techniques in disaster prevention and management.
