The military operations to free Mosul from Daesh terrorists have produced a flow of almost 80,000 dislocated persons up to now and, in this phase, it is essential to multiply humanitarian relief activities in order to meet the greater needs on the ground, especially in view of the upcoming winter season.
Granting the request of the Iraqi Government and in line with the requests made by the principal Humanitarian Organisations on the ground, Italy’s Cooperation service has provided for an ample package of relief operations worth a total of 4.7 million euros.
Thanks to Italy’s financing, in this phase of primary emergency, the UNHCR will distribute relief supplies for the winter (blankets, heaters, temporary shelters, solar energy lamps) and provide assistance to 3,000 families (approximately 20,000 people) displaced from the area of combat, while the UNICEF will provide waterworks and sanitation projects to be implemented in refugee camps and reception centres and perform activities to prevent gender violence and psycho-social assistance to abused adult and young women.
In a longer-term perspective, i.e. the first months of 2017, Italian Civil Society Organisations present in the Region will provide protection and sanitary, food and educational assistance to displaced persons.
