​Montevideo: conference to celebrate 60 years of the Treaties of Rome

On Tuesday, 21st March, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Uruguay, the well-known historian and political expert Gerardo Caetano, president of the Association of Historians of Uruguay, gave a lecture entitled “60 years since the Treaties of Rome. History and assessment of the origins of the European Union”. The meeting was opened by the Head of the EU Delegation in Uruguay, Juan Fernández Trigo, and the Italian Ambassador, Gianni Piccato. Many diplomats accredited in Uruguay also attended the event.

Gerardo Caetano focused on the significant impact of the European model on the proposals for Latin American regional integration. Mr Caetano then highlighted the huge benefits derived from the gradual nature of the process launched by the Treaties of Rome, which led to the existing European Union. All the people attending the meetings stressed the importance of ensuring a decisive promotion of the unquestionably positive results of the European integration process.
