MONTENEGRO – CONCESSION PROJECT KICKS OFF FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT OF PODGORICA AND TIVAT AIRPORTS

The Government of Montenegro has decided to launch an international call for the concession of two of the Country’s civil airports: the major Podgorica Airport and the airport of the coastal resort of Tivat, which is mainly active during the summer tourist season. After a preliminary process carried out by the Ministry of Transport, a team of lawyers is finalising a first concession project, with a special focus on the transparency of procedures and compliance with EU standards.

The goal of Montenegro’s Government is to pass the provision before the end of 2018 in order to subsequently proceed to a pre-tender gathering of manifestations of interest and/or the pre-qualification of the companies interested.

The provision is the expression of the Montenegro Government’s intention to improve the overall conditions of the Country’s airport facilities and to maximise their potential by involving foreign companies capable of investing in developing infrastructure and, at the same time, willing to share their technical know-how.

In the light of the relevance of the tourist sector for Montenegro’s economy and seeing the continuous rise in number of tourists (more than 2 million in 2017), the upgrading of infrastructure, starting with airports, is considered to be a top priority need.
