Canada: “Anatomy of space: artwork and ideas” conference in Montreal by Peter Bottazzi, designer and set designer

Italy, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has launched the third edition of the “Italian Design Day in the World” on 20 March. In 100 cities all over the world, 100 events are simultaneously organised and feature famous names in the world of Italian design in events and seminars dedicated to Italian creative processes. The success story of Italian design, which includes artistic activities, artisanal wisdom, experimentation and industrial innovation, dates back to the ’50s with Bel Design and continues today in recent creations, bringing together Italian and foreign designers in the name of Made in Italy products. It is the story of men and women whose aesthetics taste is acknowledged worldwide and whose originality continues to enrich our daily lives.

Nominated UNESCO City of Design, on 19 March 2019 Montréal hosted the lecture by Peter Bottazzi, set designer and designer, thanks to the collaboration of the Italian Cultural Institute with the Centre de Design of the University du Québec à Montréal.

His design vision, creation and production requires the use of multiple elements, often intangible and immaterial: the use of empty space, light, silence, the fragmentation of rhythm, and the change of scale in addition to asymmetry. The attempt is to make the spectators or visitors uncomfortable, by making them an active part of the narrative and giving them the tools to express themselves autonomously and personally. A journey across the known elicits no emotion. This is Peter Bottazzi’s philosophy of space.

Peter Bottazzi, set designer and designer, started his career as a puppeteer, then he became a light engineer and set designer for the Compagnia Carlo Colla e Figli. He then collaborated with numerous directors, including Peter Greenway, Monti Ovadia and Robert Wilson and has repeatedly curated the staging of displays by Steve McCurry. He produced exhibitions in Italy for clients such as Il Sole 24 ore Culture, Civita, Giunti, Contrast, international record label Sugar, Change Performing Arts, Festival di Spoleto, Triennale di Milano and Abitare il Tempo
