Blockchain technology, related data security and traceability and applications for smart cities were the main topics of a workshop organized by the Italian Embassy in Hanoi to celebrate the Italian Research Day in the World. In particular, the workshop looked into challenges and opportunities for cooperation between Italy and Vietnam in the field of science and technology.

The event, which also included a hackathon with local university students, was organized in conjunction with the University of Palermo and the University of Hanoi for Science and Technology and was also attended by Italian and Vietnamese experts from the University of Insubria, INPS, Vietnam National University, the University of Can Tho and Vietnam’s Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology.

During the first day of work, discussions focused on the use of blockchain in business activities and its application in the field of security and privacy. Cooperation activities between participating academic institutions and local businesses were also presented. INPS Director General De Luca presented a joint initiative for the management of social security information in a safe, reliable and transparent way through a unique identifier for each citizen that also works at transnational level.

The second day was dedicated to educational activities on the use of blockchain technology. Finally, a competition was held between seven groups from different universities, who submitted proposals for blockchain-based solutions. At the end of the competition, a committee gave awards to the best proposals.
