Brazil: Tim Brazil announces 5G technology testing
The CEO of Tim Brazil, Pietro Labriola, announced the intention of the mobile telephony company to begin testing 5G technology in the States of Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais and Paraiba.
The first 5G antenna will be installed in the State of Santa Catarina: the goal of the project is the turn the capital Florianopolis into a point of reference of 5G technology with a view to promoting innovation and new business models thanks to a vast range of applications in various sectors: Smart Cities, Smart Farming, Industry 4.0, Entertainment, Health, Autonomous Driving and Virtual Reality. Tim will be able to count on the cooperation of the CERTI (Centres of Reference in Innovative Technologies) Foundation.
Tim Brazil also announced another two pilot projects: in the city of Santa Rita do Sapucai, in the State of Minas Gerais, in partnership with Ericsson and the National Telecommunications Institute (INATEL), the Company will implement smart solutions for the city’s lighting system. The test is envisaged to connect several points along the road network to cover the whole urban area so as to also install security cameras. The third project will be implemented in the city of Campina Grande (Paraiba), where Tim will cooperate with Nokia, Virtus unit, and with the Federal University of Campina Grande to develop a technology for so-called Smart Cities based on the NB-IoT platform.
ANATEL, the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency, announced that the auction for 5G frequencies is scheduled for March 2020.
