Note by Minister Di Maio on the Day of Remembrance

“We all have the duty to remember to prevent the repetition of the horrors of the past. The commemoration of the many Italians, thousands of them, mostly civilians, who were barbarously murdered in the foibe caves, interned or forced to flee from Istria, Quarnaro and Dalmatia, is a moral imperative that no one can disregard, and which must encourage each of us to commit ourselves to building a society based on the values of peace and justice.

Remembering that tragedy and its victims must also spur us to look at a united Europe as a precious asset to be defended and boosted, a common home under whose roof even the tragedies of the past can be shared thanks to common European values, as President Mattarella and Slovenian President Pahor demonstrated during their joint visit to Trieste and Basovizza on 13 July 2020.”
