“This is an historical moment for the cause of democracy, and a unique opportunity to encourage new openness in relations between the international community and Myanmar”. With these words Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi expressed his “deep satisfaction” with the way in which yesterday’s election of Aung San Suu Kyi to the Parliament of Myanmar was run.
“Once again a woman becomes a symbol of democracy”, Terzi added, expressing his hope that the next meeting of EU foreign ministers would “acknowledge this very positive development”, not least for the purposes of further revising the sanctions against Myanmar. Italy has already supported dialogue with Yangon in the Brussels meetings, and Minister Terzi plans to visit the country from 24 to 26 April.
