Pistelli: Italy to rapidly complete ratification of 2005 amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials on the suppression of acts of nuclear terrorism

“As we did a few weeks ago in ratifying the Istanbul Convention on the Prevention of Violence against Women, the Italian government intends to rapidly complete ratification of the 2005 amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials on the suppression of acts of nuclear terrorism”, reported Deputy Minister Lapo Pistelli today in Vienna at the international AIEA Conference.

The conference, open to the participation of all 159 of the agency’s member states, offers an important opportunity to discuss the challenges posed by nuclear security and renew the international community’s commitment.

“Italy is heavily engaged in decommissioning the sites of the retired Italian nuclear energy programme, and offers other countries the training expertise of schools such as the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste”, Pistelli continued, reconfirming “Italy’s convinced support for the agency’s role in strengthening the international regime on nuclear security”.
