Afghanistan must not waste the opportunity offered by the presidential elections, Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini underscored.
“Afghanistan is at a fork in the road. The millions of Afghans who courageously went to the voting polls for the presidential elections confirmed their desire to live in a country on the path to completion of a long and still difficult transition to democracy, peace and development. Therefore the opportunity offered by that vote must not be wasted, and for that reason I hope that the suspicions of tampering will be rigorously investigated”, she said.
“The two candidates bear a major responsibility and it is my sincere hope that both will assure their maximum commitment to clarification regarding this controversy by collaborating with the national electoral bodies in full compliance with the Constitution. It is crucial that all the main players in this delicate political transition are cognizant of the stakes and that they consequently act responsibly”, she concluded.
