UN: Della Vedova presents National Report on Human Rights – areas for improvement still remain

The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Benedetto Della Vedova, has presented the Italian Report to the United Nations Human Rights Council on the implementation of the recommendations made to Italy. The report will be discussed in Geneva on 27 October as part of the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review.

Della Vedova was speaking today, 10 September 2014, at the Farnesina to an audience composed of representatives of civil society, experts and members of the foreign diplomat community in Italy. As he explained, “The Report is the fruit of a constructive dialogue with representatives of civil society on human rights in Italy, and of close interaction with Parliament. 74 of the 78 recommendations have been implemented, plus two that initially were not accepted”.

As Della Vedova explained, “in the sphere of human rights there are no results to be taken for granted, but achievements to be preserved with tenacity and determination and new goals always arising to be achieved. Italy’s commitment is to continue working on the remaining problems, for example concerning the prison and judicial system, or the fight against racism and all other forms of discrimination”.
