Ukraine: Mogherini hails democratic victory. Now on to reform and a plan for peace

According to Minister for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini, yesterday’s elections in Ukraine confirm that the country is ready to undertake the path toward stabilisation.

“The parliamentary elections in Ukraine represent a victory for democracy”, the minister said.

“It is important that there was the broadest possible turnout, which bears witness to the commitment of the political forces and the Ukrainian people to building a future of peace and stability”, she continued.

“I would like to thank the electoral observers and, in particular, those of the OSCE-ODHIR mission led by Tana de Zulueta, for their precious contribution over recent weeks”, the minister added.

“Italy will continue to support the reforms that President Petro Poroshenko and the new Parliament are going to have to pursue, and we confirm our commitment to the achievement of a political solution to the crisis and the stabilisation of Ukraine, beginning with the implementation of the Minsk accords, the only route to ensuring security, prosperity and growth to that country and the entire region”, Mogherini concluded.
