UN Resolution on combating the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, which is competent for human rights issues, has adopted a Resolution on combating the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Adopted by consensus today in New York, the Resolution had 125 co-sponsors, 21 more than the previous text of 2012. The General Assembly will adopt the Resolution definitively in December 2014.

Italy has traditionally been one of the Resolution’s promoters, together with international partners – especially those representing the regions most badly affected by the phenomenon.

The adoption of the FGM Resolution marks another success for Italy’s work to protect women and children’s rights. It comes just days from the Third Committee’s adoption, again by consensus, of the first Resolution against early and forced marriage.
