“I would like to express my deep satisfaction with the decision by UNESCO to institute a mechanism for the coordination of urgent interventions in crisis areas”, stated Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni. “This response to Italy’s proposal confirms our country’s guiding role in the defence of cultural heritage at risk in war-torn areas”, he added.
Approved and co-signed by 53 counties, the resolution calls for urgent intervention on conflict zones and the commitment to continue efforts toward inclusion of the cultural component within the context of UN peacekeeping missions.
