El Niño Emergency: Italy earmarks 1 million euros for Somalia

Heeding the appeal launched by the World Food Program (WFP) for the drought emergency in Somalia caused by the El Niño phenomenon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has earmarked an emergency contribution of one million euros to support the WFP’s food aid programs in the Country. Italy’s contribution will enable activities consisting both of transferring funds for the purchase of food products for the approximately 160,000 people residing in the hardest hit areas and of performing supportive interventions for enhancing the dietary intake of nearly 228,000 malnourished children and pregnant or nursing women.

The allocation will supplement the National El Niño Response Plan presented last March by the Italian Cooperation Directorate providing for an overall financial contribution of 10 million euros for the African continent.
