The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, at the end of a telephone conversation with the families of the Italian victims, said:
“I have spoken with the families of the Italian victims who died in Barcelona.
I conveyed to them our sympathy and all the possible support in these difficult hours and I told them that I will go to Barcelona as soon as the Spanish authorities will have finalised the required procedures.
Yesterday was an infinitely sad day, not only for Spain but for the whole world.
But we react firmly, holding our heads high at all levels.
At institutional and personal level, by continuing to defend our culture, our values, our traditions and our customs.
I assured the families of our fellow-citizens that they will receive the Foreign Ministry’s utmost assistance.
We will assure the injured our full support until they are discharged from hospital and return to Italy.
Lastly, to the Spanish authorities and people, we convey the closeness of our Country and our firm commitment to fight, together, all forms of terrorism.”
