The acquisition by Qatar Airways of 49% of Meridiana signals a turning point for the future of the company and Italian air transport, further enhancing the value of the nation’s tourist heritage, especially in Southern Italy. The deal contributes to strengthening the financial partnership between Italy and Qatar, which has resulted in increased investment by Qatari companies in Italy and a strong industrial presence of Italian companies in Qatar. This has been further enhanced by Italian companies being awarded a major contract in the defence sector and the building of strategic infrastructure, including a subway line in Doha and one of the main football stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“During the recent talks I held with Qatar authorities,” said Minister Alfano, “I highlighted the need to further promote the economic partnership between the two countries in strategic sectors, with major mutual investments and the development of our technological collaboration.”
