The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, chaired the Joint Committee for Development Cooperation today.
“We have approved a package of programmes and initiatives for a total of more than 18 million euros, to the benefit of Countries in all major geographic areas, from Africa to the Middle East, and from Asia to Latin America,” said the Foreign Minister.
“In Africa, we focused on the region of the Horn, allocating more than 3 million euros to Somalia and Djibouti to favour the increase of maternal and child healthcare services and the improvement of the quality of medical services in a hospital. We have also earmarked the last residual resources of the Africa Fund for two projects to improve the civil registration system for minors’ right to have an identity in Ethiopia (one million) and for an initiative aimed at developing the community’s awareness on the risk of illegal migration in West Africa (800,000 euros)”, continued Minister Alfano.
“In the Middle East, we have reserved 4 million euros for the Syrian crisis to fund initiatives aimed at fostering the access of Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon to education, healthcare services and subsistence means. Furthermore, we financed interventions to support displaced persons in Iraqi Kurdistan and to assure access to healthcare and vocational training in Palestine.”
“Lastly, in Latin America, we have decided to support a school inclusion programme in El Salvador,” concluded the minister.
