The meeting’s agenda, in addition to focusing on the situation in Libya, also included a discussion on the measures needed to combat the illegal trafficking of human beings and to promote development cooperation.

Minister Alfano confirmed that Italy is supporting Ghassan Salamé in his efforts to promote to the extent possible an inclusive political dialogue.Minister Alfano highlighted the importance of making use of the UN Special Representative’s Road Map, also underlining that there is no military solution to the country’s crisis. “It is our wish and what our diplomacy is working for, that free elections be held at the end of a negotiating process,” said the minister.

To supplement the many cooperation activities under way, the Italian government has decided to fund projects by Italian NGOs for approx. 6 million euros, aimed at strengthening basic health care facilities, protecting women and minors and providing humanitarian assistance (through healthcare services, food and psychological support) in centres hosting migrants and refugees.
