Mission to Japan of Minister Moavero Milanesi

The mission has the objective of re-launching the already solid, special and articulated relations between Italy and Japan and is concrete evidence of the great interest Italy has in the Asian continent.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, will be in Japan, in Tokyo, on 4 and 5 June. The mission has the objective of re-launching the already solid, special and articulated relations between Italy and Japan and is concrete evidence of the great interest Italy has in the Asian continent.

Minister Moavero will meet the Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taro Kono, with whom he has had steady relations of friendship and mutual consultation for quite some time, and in particular there have already been four previous meetings. Furthermore, the Minister will have a meeting with the member of the Japanese Parliament who is also President of the Italy-Japan Parliamentary Friendship Association, Amari Akira, and another meeting with the representatives of the Italian companies and of the community of compatriots who live and work in Japan.

The various meetings are an opportunity to review the status of the various relationships and examine the main regional dossiers and multilateral issues of special interest, also in view of the G-20 Summit scheduled to take place in Osaka on 28-29 June and in the perspective of Italy’s Presidency of the G-20 in 2021. In addition, opportunities for economic collaboration between Italy and Japan in the bilateral context and in third Countries will be examined – with specific emphasis on joint projects in Asia and Africa – as well as in the context of initiatives aimed at improving interconnections between Europe and East Asia with appropriate investments in infrastructure, in compliance with the principles shared within the European Union and with the system of alliances to which Italy belongs.

Special attention will be paid to cultural relations and to the numerous Italian initiatives planned to take place in Japan, which is one of the most sensitive countries to our artistic heritage, such as the proposed exhibition on Caravaggio in three major Japanese cities (Sapporo, Osaka and Nagoya) and the weeks dedicated to the Italian language and to our food products. Minister Moavero will also visit the Italian Cultural Institute in Tokyo, where he will have a special meeting with the teachers who teach Italian.
