Note by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Democratic Republic of Congo

60 years after the birth of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy recalls that the peacemaking process in the Est area is still far away.

Italy follows with the utmost attention the progressive deterioration of security conditions in the East provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri), where since the beginning of the year there has been a constant escalation of violence among militias , involving the civilian population, which has further worsened in recent weeks.

Italy adheres, in particular, to the recent call by the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, to the Kinshasa Authorities to work resolutely to guarantee security in the area, also with the support of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), and to maintain a constructive dialogue with neighboring countries in order to achieve lasting and shared peace as soon as possible.

Italy reaffirms its full commitment, together with the European Partners, to keep the attention of the international community high on this crisis that systematically affects the civilian population, and will continue to provide support also through the emergency interventions of development cooperation that go alongside the projects of Italian Associations and NGOs, including religious ones, that with their solidarity contribute significantly to the improvement of living conditions in that region so long affected by war and epidemics.
