We have learned with dismay of the death of the President of the Republic of Chad, Idriss Déby Itno.
The Foreign Ministry extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and expresses its strongest condemnation of any use of violence to gain political power.
Chad is a crucial partner for Italy in the fight against terrorism and instability in the Sahel region. The security of and fight against terrorism in the Sahel will be one of the key themes of the ministerial meeting of the Anti-Daesh Coalition that Italy will host in the coming months.
In this delicate situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation therefore reiterates Italy’s support and closeness to our friends, the people of Chad, in the hope of a peaceful transition towards a fast return to an inclusive constitutional order based on respect for the rule of law.
