Speaking at the third plenary session of the Conference on the Future of Europe, Undersecretary Benedetto Della Vedova underscored how a European common political space is emerging from the difficulties of these past few years.

Undersecretary Della Vedova called on the Plenary to take into serious consideration and carefully discuss the recommendations made by citizens in the different panels, starting with the European democracy and the right of legislative initiative of the European Parliament also invoked by President Macron. Della Vedova went on to say that the time is ripe to increasingly Europeanize the electoral process by establishing transnational lists and the possibility of electing a given number of parliamentarians from these lists: instruments that increasingly foster the citizens’ sense of belonging to the Union, as recommended by the panel of citizens that closed its proceedings in Florence last December.

Undersecretary Della Vedova also mentioned the citizens’ recommendations on the need to enhance information on European issues and linguistic pluralism and to combat fake news. “We must come out of the bubble and, as a Union, communicate in all the languages to reach out to all the citizens, also through new technologies,” he said.

“I therefore call on the Conference and on all of us to fuel this democratic moment and try to materialize the citizens’ proposals to extent possible. It would be the best way to honour the legacy of President Sassoli,” Undersecretary Della Vedova concluded.
