Today, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, held a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Nicu Popescu, at Palazzo Chigi.
Minister Tajani highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between Italy and Moldova, which resulted from a natural, cultural kinship and is further strengthened by the presence of the largest Moldavian community abroad in Italy. During the discussion, the parties expressed satisfaction with the growth recorded in the economic field. In 2022, the trade between the two countries reached record levels, with an increase of 38.2% compared to the previous year.
To prove their intention to relaunch the already excellent relationships between the two countries, Tajani and Popescu ratified a Joint Declaration of Strategic Partnership, which will enhance bilateral relations.
Moreover, Minister Tajani reiterated Italy’s support for Moldova’s integration path into the European Union, hoping that the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the Union will start as soon as possible.
Italy and Moldova agree on supporting Ukraine and condemning the Russian aggression. Since the beginning of this crisis, our country has sent substantial financial support and humanitarian aid to Chisinau. More specifically, in 2022, Italy financed three interventions of the Migration Fund in partnership with the UNHCR, IOM and UNICEF for EUR 20 million. In addition to the previous, the country allocated EUR 10 million to contribute to the UNDP’s Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund.
