Third medical evacuation flight of civilians from the Gaza Strip arrived in Italy

An Air Force C-130 aircraft carrying civilians in need of medical assistance from the Gaza Strip landed at Ciampino military airport a short while ago. The flight – the third since the start of operations – was organised by the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Unit and the Interforce Summit Operations Command (COVI).

Today’s operation falls within the framework of previous medical evacuations carried out at the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto. Thanks to the deployment of the Navy ship Vulcano and Air Force vehicles, the said operations have so far enabled the transfer of 85 Palestinian civilians, who have been accommodated in Italian health facilities together with their escorts thanks to the action of the Interior and Health Ministries.

The civilians evacuated today, mainly relatives of compatriots or Palestinians living in Italy, were joined – after a complex mediation operation – by two wounded volunteers from the Gaza Red Crescent, whom the Lazio Region offered to hospitalise in local health facilities at the request of the Red Crescent President. A total of 45 people were on board.

As early as Saturday, the staff of the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Unit have been following the preparation and boarding operations of the humanitarian flight in Egypt.

On arrival at Ciampino, the President of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca, and the COVI Commander, Gen. Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, were present.
