“As part of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting agenda, to be held in Capri in April, I will include, on behalf of the Government – the fight against Fentanyl, the synthetic drug that poses an increasing threat to our citizens”, stated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani after a coordination meeting on the fight against the consumption of synthetic drugs held at Palazzo Chigi.
The UNODC World Drug Report 2023 highlighted the growing spread of synthetic drugs. As far as Italy is concerned, according to the UNODC, the consumption of synthetic drugs is still low; however, given that they are easily purchasable online, an increase has been recorded mainly among the young.
On 7 July, US Secretary Anthony J. Blinken held a meeting to launch the “Global Coalition” to address synthetic drugs. Tajani took part in that meeting. Italy is now drafting a “National Plan to address the misuse of Fentanyl and synthetic opioids” to align with the Global Coalition’s commitment and meet the need for an effective prevention plan. All Agenda of the Ministries will be involved in this procedure.
