Italy-Iran – Tajani’s appeal to Tehran for moderation. Meeting between the Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iranian ambassador in Rome

Italy calls on Iran to help achieve a phase of de-escalation throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East region. Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani asked the Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, to take a first formal step and deliver the message to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Rome.

During a conversation this afternoon, Ambassador Guariglia relayed to Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri Italy’s offer to help interrupt the cycle of military actions that could provoke a wider military confrontation throughout the region. Minister Tajani believes that “the new administration led by President Pezeshkian and all Iranian institutions should move towards confrontation with Europe and all the countries in the region. Italy will always be ready to engage in any political and diplomatic activity”.

Italy urges Iran to address the confrontation with international players in the region in a strategic manner. The Italian Government, in its capacity as G7 Presidency, will remain committed to conveying to Iran the appeals for moderation coming from the group’s member countries but also from the states in the region. Minister Tajani, also in the framework of the G7, is continuing his diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation, continuing to urge all partners in the region to engage in dialogue and moderation.
