Note from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Italian nationals in Madeira

With regard to the conditions of unprotected Italian passengers in Madeira after the cancellation of a WizzAir flight to Rome, Italy’s Ambassador to Lisbon Claudio Miscia set up an ‘emergency unit’ to monitor the situation of Italian nationals on the island on the instructions of Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani.

The Ambassador has asked honorary consul Margarida Valle Dos Santos to liaise with her staff at the airport for passengers who have not been re-accommodated in hotels on the island by Wizzair. The Italian embassy also monitored the repatriation of eight passengers who returned on a flight via Warsaw.

In Rome, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ENAC, the Italian civil aviation body, have contacted the airline’s Italian representatives to speed up the dispatch of a new aircraft to return to Italy in operational cooperation with the Guardia di Finanza.

The airline Wizzair reported this evening that a special flight could be made operational tomorrow to bring back to Italy the passengers stranded in Madeira since 15 August.

For any needs, the emergency mobile phone that Italian nationals can contact is +351-919-523500.
