The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, is in Brussels to attend the Informal Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union.
The meeting, which will be chaired by High Representative Borrell, will open with a focus on the latest developments in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. “It will be an opportunity to reiterate Italy’s full and unwavering political, military, financial and humanitarian support for Ukraine. Now more than ever it is crucial to avoid further escalation. Let us build on Switzerland’s approach to the Peace Conference by building together a shared negotiating platform that can lead to a just peace,” said Tajani.
The EU Foreign Affairs Ministers will also address the political and humanitarian situation in Venezuela. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, “the Venezuelan authorities must make the election results public. The Venezuelan people have the right to freely decide their own destiny.”
The Middle East conflict will also be discussed at the meeting. “We address all regional actors with an appeal for moderation. Escalation must be avoided at all costs,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
On that occasion, Tajani will also report to the other Ministers on the long conversation he had yesterday with US Secretary of State Blinken, with particular regard to the case of the Greek ship Sounion. If not rescued soon, it could risk causing environmental damage in the Red Sea, where, as is well known, the Aspides mission operates, already involved in an operation to assist the ship in question.
On the sidelines of the Informal Foreign Affairs Council, Minister Tajani will have some bilateral meetings.
