Following the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Venezuelan Embassy in Rome was summoned to the Farnesina today.
The meeting aimed to reiterate the necessity of ensuring consular assistance and access to Italian detainees in Venezuela who are subject to arrest or detention for political reasons, particularly following the elections last July. The request for the release of all political prisoners was also reiterated during the meeting.
During the discussion, Italy’s position on the situation in Venezuela, already reflected in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Statement of Fiuggi on 26 November 2024, was reaffirmed. Italy will continue to support the efforts of regional partners to facilitate a democratic and peaceful transition that reflects the will of the Venezuelan people, as expressed in the 28 July elections.
Italian Foreign Ministry, the Embassy in Caracas, and the Italian consular network in Venezuela are committed to protecting and assisting the community of Italians and Italian descendants residing in the country, including through a permanent “task force” established at the initiative of Minister Tajani.
