Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani is on a mission to Cairo to attend the Conference to Enhance the Humanitarian Response in Gaza. This event is co-organised by Egypt and the United Nations. The conference will be chaired by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag, and UNRWA High Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini. The meeting will also be attended by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, and numerous Prime Ministers and Ministers from across the Mediterranean region.

The conference is being held amidst stalled ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and growing concerns about the UN’s role in the Palestinian Territories. The primary goal of the meeting is to enhance aid for the civilian population in the Strip.

The meeting has four main objectives: 1. Humanitarian response; 2. Ensuring proper preparations for the ceasefire; 3. Supporting the flow of aid to Gaza through Egypt; 4. Planning the first phase of recovery.

The organisers expect to receive humanitarian pledges of financial support, as well as indications of readiness for reconstruction efforts when conditions permit.

“In Cairo, I am confident that we will continue along the path we outlined in Pescara and then in Fiuggi. I thank Egypt and the United Nations for organising this important meeting, which will serve as an excellent opportunity to strengthen our coordination with Arab partners, discuss how to promote stability in the region, and consider future reconstruction”, said Tajani.

The meeting will also mark the first opportunity for the international community to discuss the new chapter of the crisis in Syria, particularly following the advance of military formations from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group toward the southern regions of the country.
