The third ministerial meeting of the “Aqaba Format +” on Syria took place today in Paris. Representing Italy was Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Maria Tripodi, delegated by Minister Tajani.
“Italy is at the forefront of the humanitarian response in support of the Syrian people across all areas of the country and in the most urgent sectors,” stated the Undersecretary. She added, “We are therefore ready to contribute to the reconstruction process by providing direct assistance and leveraging both Italian civil society organisations operating on the ground and the vast potential of our businesses”.
Italy’s commitment to Syria runs deep and was reaffirmed by Minister Tajani’s visit to Damascus in January. Since 2019, Italy has allocated over €40 million annually to the Syrian crisis, covering both humanitarian aid and early recovery efforts, enabling support for humanitarian responses across the country. In 2024, during the Brussels Conference, Italy pledged €45 million in response to the Syrian crisis. Humanitarian assistance will continue into 2025, with a particular focus on the healthcare sector and “Quick Fix” interventions to support the country, including humanitarian transport for the delivery of medicines and medical equipment.
