This afternoon, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, held a cordial telephone conversation with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, focusing on the bilateral partnership, the situation in the Middle East—with particular focus on the Gaza Strip—and Sudan.
The two Ministers agreed to convene the Bilateral Joint Committee in Rome at the earliest opportunity to jointly address several dossiers of mutual interest.
They also discussed developments in the Gaza Strip, just days after the Security Council approved the resolution presented by the United States on the American peace plan. Both Ministers underlined the importance of continuing efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and achieve a lasting peace, in order to advance the political process. Minister Tajani reiterated Italy’s humanitarian commitment, highlighting reconstruction priorities, including security, the private sector, and healthcare.
With regard to Sudan, the Ministers agreed on the need for a global ceasefire to revive the political process and facilitate humanitarian access. Minister Tajani also shared with Minister Abdelatty the announcement of the initiative “Italy for Sudan”, which will shortly see a humanitarian aid flight depart for the refugee population in Port Sudan—particularly children—in collaboration with local Christian organisations.
