The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, received Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, at the Farnesina today. The meeting forms part of the ongoing dialogue between the two countries, most recently marked by the meeting between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani last April.
The Undersecretary expressed her appreciation for the role played by Qatar in fostering dialogue in the Middle East, reiterating the importance of keeping diplomatic channels open and supporting long-term negotiations, with particular attention to the situation in Gaza and tensions in the Persian Gulf. “Italy and Qatar continue to work together to encourage de-escalation, support the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and promote lasting peace in the region”, said Undersecretary Tripodi.
Finally, considerable attention was given to strengthening bilateral economic relations, given that trade between the two countries has reached EUR 4.8 billion, with a particular focus on opportunities in the energy and investment sectors.
