The “Workshop on Emerging Technologies in the Chemical Industry” of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the OPCW, and the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), opened today at the Foreign Ministry.
The SAB is an advisory body composed of twenty-five chemical experts, providing technical advice to the Director General of the OPCW on scientific and technological developments in the chemical sector. Since January 1, 2026, Dr. Matteo Guidotti has been the SAB President, the first Italian to hold this position.
The works were introduced by the Deputy Director General for Political Affairs and International Security of the Foreign Ministry, Minister Plenipotentiary Alessandro Gonzales, who recalled that Italy has the seventh-largest chemical industry in the world, a result achieved thanks in part to the fundamental role played by the promotion of scientific research at the national level. He also emphasized the importance of international scientific cooperation as a driver of dialogue and response to global challenges.
The workshop will include three days of discussions and exchanges of experiences between global chemical science and industrial technology experts, as well as representatives of national and international academic, scientific, and industrial circles. Special attention will be paid to the application of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies and their impact on global chemical safety.
