The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, co-chaired the third session of bilateral political consultations between Italy and Bangladesh today at the Farnesina, alongside the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Ambassador Asad Alam Siam, as provided for in the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding. Ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations, which will be marked next year, the meeting reaffirmed the strength of the friendship between the two countries and outlined the prospects for further strengthening the bilateral partnership.
Particular attention was paid to cooperation on migration issues. The Parties reaffirmed the importance of combating irregular migration and human trafficking, and of further strengthening cooperation to promote regular migration channels, within the framework of the Flow Decree (Decreto Flussi) and the Memorandum of Understanding on migration and mobility signed in 2025. The two Secretaries General then expressed their satisfaction with the intensive political dialogue and the growing opportunities in the areas of economic cooperation, trade and investment, whilst also highlighting significant scope for development in the fields of defence and security, as well as culture and higher education.
Finally, the consultations provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on key regional and international issues, with particular reference to the Indo-Pacific, South Asia and Bangladesh’s relations with the European Union.
