Joint Statement on the Risk of Famine in Sudan

notizie_cs_FARNESINA_SFERA

Ministers from over 30 countries have adopted a joint statement on the risk of famine in Sudan, which is facing a severe deterioration in food security due to the conflict, with 19.5 million people – 41 per cent of the population – experiencing severe acute food insecurity, of whom 5 million are in a state of emergency.

To avert the risk of famine, the signatory Ministers urge the parties to the conflict to remove obstacles to humanitarian assistance, ensuring safe, rapid and unimpeded access for aid workers; to refrain from targeting humanitarian personnel and civilian infrastructure; and to facilitate relief operations along all transit routes, including air access to Darfur. They urge the international community and financial and development institutions to urgently increase funding.

On behalf of Italy, the statement was signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani.
