To mark the World Food Day, organised by the FAO, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani reaffirms Italy’s commitment to combating hunger and promoting the right to food, a fundamental prerequisite for peace, human dignity and sustainable development.
“Food security is an essential component of Italy’s efforts to support peace, stability and sustainable development. By providing assistance to populations affected by crises, strengthening international cooperation and promoting safer and more resilient supply chains, Italy is contributing to the international community’s efforts to combat hunger and ensure adequate access to food,” commented Minister Tajani.
Italy also contributes to this challenge through its role as the host country for the United Nations’ agri-food centre. A wealth of expertise and international cooperation that also translates into concrete initiatives of solidarity.
Through the ‘Food for Gaza’ initiative, the Italian Government has allocated around 2,400 tonnes of food aid, medical supplies and essential goods to the people of the Gaza Strip, in collaboration with the FAO and the WFP.
Through ‘Italy for Sudan’, over 130 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been mobilised in response to the serious crisis in the country. Italy’s efforts focus on supporting the most vulnerable segments of the population, with particular attention to children, students, and families forced to abandon their homes.
At the same time, Italy is promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience of agri-food systems and ensuring the continuity of supplies, including through the Rome Coalition on Fertiliser Access and Food Security, launched jointly with Croatia and involving the FAO and international partners, to address the challenges linked to supply chains and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
