The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, on behalf of Minister Antonio Tajani, attended the G20 Trade ministerial meeting in Milwaukee under the US Presidency.
The discussions focused on combating the coercive use of trade in agri-food products, structural overcapacity, the future of the most-favoured-nation (MFN) principle and the elimination of forced labour from global value chains.
During the proceedings, the Undersecretary reiterated Italy’s constructive approach, supporting proposals aimed at combating the coercive use of trade, tackling structural overcapacity and strengthening the fight against forced labour in global value chains. “Our preferred approach is, as always, dialogue with our counterparts, aimed at finding and reaching concrete solutions”, emphasised Tripodi.
With regard to structural overcapacity, the Undersecretary highlighted the need, within the framework of the European Union’s trade policy, to strengthen trade defence instruments in order to mitigate the effects on the European industrial system. At the same time, Italy emphasised the importance of seeking consensual solutions to global challenges, capable of ensuring that shared responses are both effective and sustainable.
